Largely through the sea and through ports people has, thousands of years ago,<br \/>\ncome into contact with each other and has influenced each other . The oldest ports in the world were mainly on rivers &#8211; where ships were protected from storms. Such as the Nile in Egypt, the Euphrates and the Tigris in Mesopotamia,<br \/>\nthe Indus in India and the Yellow River in China. They traded with each other more than four thousand years ago. Rotterdam also started out as a river port; Antwerp and Hamburg still are.
